Plant Description

Plant height: 5 – 9 inches (12 – 23 cm)

Jasminum sambac is a species of jasmine native to a small region in the eastern Himalayas in Bhutan, Pakistan, Karachi and neighbouring India. It is cultivated in many places, especially across much of South and Southeast Asia.
Jasminum sambac is a small shrub or vine growing up to 0.5 to 3 m (1.6 to 9.8 ft) in height. It is widely cultivated for its attractive and sweetly fragrant flowers. The flowers are also used for perfumes and for making tea. It is known as the Arabian jasmine in English.

Planting and care

Initial care for 1-2 weeks after receiving plant at your location:

  • Do not overwater suddenly, check the moisture in the soil first. If too dry then apply water gradually.
  • Keep the plant in indirect bright light. Gradually move it to more bright location.
  • Do not re-pot immediately after receiving it.

Key requirements to keep plant healthy:

 

Sunlight: Full to partial sunlight

Soil: Well-drained loamy or red loamy fertile soil.

Water: Medium

Temperature: 20 to 30 degree C

Fertilizer: Apply any organic fertilizer.

Caring for Jasminum sambac

    • Keep the plant where it will receive Direct or indirect bright sunlight (Min. 5-6 hrs.) each day.

Soil:

    • Use nutrient rich, well drained, well areated, and porous potting mix.

Watering:

    • Water a plant when the topsoil in pot (5 to 8 cm) feels dry to touch.
    • Water thoroughly in the summer and reduce watering for the winter & rainy season.
    • Try to water the plants in the morning around 8-10 am.

Application of Fertilizer:

    • Apply fertilize a plant mostly in the spring and early monsoon season.
    • Loosen the topsoil without disturbing the roots to the plant can easily uptake the nutrients and moisture.

Re-potting:

    • When a plant outgrows in current pot, re-pot with fresh potting soil and some fertilizer.
    • Do the re-potting late evening and keep the plant in shady area for 2 to 3 days then move the plant to its required light condition.

Plant Protection:

  • Remove dead, infected or damaged plant parts.
  • For any insect attack or disease, you can use Neem oil, Eucalyptus oil or Citrus oil spray for primary treatment.

Ornamental use: It is used as the ornamental shrub plant.

Medicinal use: It is considered to be an apt and biological cure for jaundice and other venereal diseases. The flower buds help in the treatment of ulcers, vesicles, boils, skin diseases and eye disorders. The leaves extract against breast tumours. Drinking Jasmine tea regularly helps in curing cancer. Its oil is very effective in calming and relaxing.
