Description

Brassica oleracea L. is the scientific name of the kale. The leaves grow from a central stem that elongates as it grows. Kale is a hardy biennial (it take two years to go to flower and complete its life-cycle), but it is usually grown as an annual.

Planting And Care

  • Avoid too much acidic soil
  • Mulch with compost, finely ground leaves, weed-free hay, straw, pine needles, or finely ground bark to keep the soil cool and moist and to keep down weeds
  • Look for insects like aphids or larvae, and apply with organic insecticide

  • If you are starting them inside, then do so 5 to 7 weeks before the last expected frost
  • If you are direct sowing the seeds outside, do so 2 to 4 weeks before the last frost and/or anytime at least 10 weeks before the first frost of the next season
  • Space them 18 to 24 inches apart (for the transplanted plantlets)
  • Set plants at the depth of half an inch or 1 inch
  • They sprout best when the soil temperature is around 70 degrees
